This talk explores common ways Artificial Intelligence is represented in popular culture and media, often portraying Al as divine or possessing supernatural abilities. Such portrayals frequently draw from Judeo-Christian conceptions of God.
Based on her new book God & Technology (Cambridge University Press, 2025), Dr. Heidi Campbell unpacks these narratives, examining their implications for how the public understands both the promises and challenges of Al in today's world.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Heidi Campbell is Professor of Communication, affiliate faculty in Religious Studies, and a Presidential Impact Fellow at Texas A&M University. She directs the Network for New Media, Religion and Digital Culture Studies and is a founder of the field of Digital Religion.
